I seem to have an EFW file?

The file we send through is a normal ,ZIP file containing an Excel document, so not a .EXE.

An EFW extension is a Compressed .ZIP or executable .EXE file renamed by CA Security Centre to have a “.efw” extension; typically applies to e-mail attachments scanned by Computer Associates (CA) antivirus software. (In our case it would have been a .ZIP file). See this post at Filext for more information: http://filext.com/file-extension/EFW Continue reading

Rental Workbook on Open Office?

We have had a number of inquiries about Excel, the Rental Workbook, and different spreadsheet programs such as OpenOffice.

OpenOffice from OpenOffice.org does not come with VBA support, which means it will not run any coding or macros created in Excel. According to web research, you may be able to try a complete build of version 2.4, though we cannot offer support for non-Microsoft issues. Continue reading

File Error: Data may have been lost

We’ve had reports from a number of customers regarding the issue you reported where they were using a combination of Excel 2000 and Internet Explorer (“IE”) 7 or 8. (Not so much recently, as a lot of people have since upgraded to version 2007).

Update: This error now appears with some installs of Office 2003.  for reference, please read this Microsoft update article.  If you have Service Pack 2 installed (SP2), you may be able to download a hot-fix at this Microsoft update page, which also explains how to download SP2 if you don’t yet have it.  Please note, once Microsoft issue their next update for Office 2010, Office 2003 will no longer be supported so the following paragraphs will also apply. Interesting Times

This past month has been interesting, to say the least.  The website has played a big part in that, and the blog is now waiting to be ‘blogged’!

So, to blog, or not to blog was the question, and the answer seemed to be a resounding ‘Yes!’

One of my favourite authors was the inspiration for the title of this note – Terry Pratchett. He wrote one of his brilliant novels with interesting Times being the title, playing on the theme that it is often though that ‘May you live in Interesting Times’ was an ancient Chinese curse; it is a popular theory but in reality there is no such curse as far as investigation will tell you.

Excellent idea for a curse I reckon – the imagination creates a picture of the very idea of ‘interesting’ being something other than fascinating or attention-grabbing and that’s how it went last month.

Interesting times sums up the past chaotic month of transferring everything from our old site, to this lovely new one, and then realising that the web change was only the tip of the proverbial iceberg, and so many other tiny weenie bits & pieces suddenly needed to be done.  All very exciting, and now it feels as though I can finally calm a little and do some posting!

On with the blog!

My aim is for this blog to be loosely based around Excel, starting with simple things, and occasionally getting to the complex functions and features; and Excel Australia’s own product, the Rental Workbook. Occasionally I might digress, and touch on  other interesting topics that catch my imagination.

I’ll update periodically, and bring new ideas and information to the fore 🙂 – I hope you enjoy!

Exciting new website

Well, this morning has been very exciting, with the launch of our brand new website.  A new look, new easier ways to order, along with a new blog and knowledge base. Everything is new! Please be patient as we move all our information over from the old knowledge base and support areas – everything will be available soon 🙂

Many thanks to our web designer, for all her hard work that she put into the new site!
